Modern Chess Instructions by William Steinitz, 1889

William Steinitz (born Wilhelm Steinitz; May 14, 1836 – August 12, 1900) was a Bohemian-Austrian and, later, American chess player. From 1886 to 1894, he was the first World Chess Champion. He was also a highly influential writer and chess theoretician (credit to Wikipedia, which has more details on Steinitz's life, including family tragedy and poverty). Lovely patterned inside cover to the book - which was once owned by Sydney Meymott (I know this because he stamped his name in the book several times!). There's a really rather wonderfully researched article by Richard James all about Sydney Meymott here https://britishchessnews.com/2021/11/27/minor-pieces-19-sydney-meymott/
