Old English style set, 4" kings, gorgeous knights!

Purchased from Dermot and Ciaran Rochford (finerpieces.com) - this is a beautiful set in rosewood and boxwood (?) from the first half of the 19th century. The Rochfords thought the knights had more than a passing resemblance to those by George Merrifield, one of the best carvers of his day.

Whilst the set could have been made by anyone, Calvert is perhaps the most likely candidate - and, even more intriguing, is the prospect that the knights in this set were carved by George Merrifield when he was apprenticed to Calvert's workshop in 1807 (as per Jon Crumiller's excellent research paper from 2016, 189 Fleet St., an Important Address in Chess History").
