The Chess-Player's Handbook, Howard Staunton, 1848
In good condition for its age - this is a second edition (the first edition was published in 1847). Written by Howard Staunton - he who gave his name and endorsement to the wonderful design first marketed by Jaques of London in 1849. So this Staunton" is older than the oldest Jaques Staunton!
Copious tiny notes on a game or two best the beginning of the book - not clear when these were written. The book was owned for a time by the British Legion Institute in 1936, when the book was already 88 years young.
