Promotional set for the film "Innocent Moves" (aka "Searching for Bobby Fischer")
A rather rare surviving travelling chess set, used as a promotional item for Paramount Pictures' 1993 release of Innocent Moves in the UK. This is likely to have been distributed to journalists and film critics as part of a marketing drive.
The set is in pristine condition - the magnetic chess pieces have not even been separated from each other. Clearly, whoever received this either was not inspired to take up chess or already had their own chess sets for play. I prefer the second option, since they kept hold of the set and looked after it so well, including the original outer box. The playing pieces are 2cm at their widest.
Innocent Moves was released in the US as Searching for Bobby Fischer, and is widely regarded as one of the best chess films ever made. It tells the true story of seven-year-old prodigy Josh Waitzkin as he navigates the intense world of competitive chess. Caught between the rigid, classical training of a formal tutor and the lightning-fast speed chess of New York park hustlers, the film explores the pressure to become a ruthless competitor while trying to maintain the pure joy of the game. Though a box office underdog, it was a massive critical triumph, earning an Oscar nomination and a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
