Austrian Coffee-House Selenus/Biedermeier harlequin set c1790-1820?
An Austrian Coffee-House harlequin set, which winged its way from Wien (Vienna) to join my collection. Hints of earlier Selenus mixed with later Biedermeier.
Whilst I've called this a harlequin set, a "jigsaw puzzle" might be more apt. I think there are at least two sets mixed together, though for how long they have been mixed I do not know. It was sold to me by a very kind Viennese gentleman who had come across the set whilst clearing through his "long deceased" father's belongings.
What I can say, though, is that the set works beautifully together, despite the mismatches between pieces, having a consistent rich patina, acquired, I would suggest, through many years spent together. Adding to the "jigsaw puzzle" nature of the set is that there is significant variation in turning even between pieces which clearly originated together. Variations as seen in 18th century pieces. The dark knights certainly remind me of Dutch or northern european 18th century sets.
Kings just over 2.5" tall - a perfect size for taking along to a coffee house for a game or three. And, I suspect, the reason why the set is so mixed - this is a set that was played with, as evidenced by the breaks and losses. But also a set that was, conversely, also cared for, as evidenced by the repairs and replacements.
