Spears Chess Set c1970s
A fairly ubiquitous chess set from Spears Games. If you have ever gone treasure hunting for chess sets in a UK charity shop (guilty as charged) then you will undoubtedly have come across one of these sets.
The set came in a sturdy box with sturdy cardboard board and plastic pieces, everything you needed to start playing. However, the red tray that the pieces are housed in is slightly less sturdy, and many are split, cracked and crumpled.
I think I had one of these sets when I was younger - even then I could tell the quality wasn't terribly high with light, unweighted, playing pieces. I hardly played with it to my recollection (though still managed to crack the red tray). This particular example has a red tray in actually pretty pristine condition - so another set probably not played with much!
To Spears' credit, the design was pretty nice, and I especially like the knights.
Kings 2.66" tall.
