Original Herman Ohme chessmen, c1954
An iconic set.
I believe this to be one of Herman Ohme's original sets, handmade by the man himself circa 1954. A masterclass in mid-century design. Clean, elegant and simply stylish.
Much has been written about Herman Ohme and the origins of this set - so I will not repeat that here, though I will link to a lovely tribute to Herman.
I have seen one original set previously (only online), which had an identical box - though that box didn't have the label (as far as I could see). The label is simplistic perfection in itself "Designed & Manufactured by Herman Ohme, Venice, California, Des. Pat. No. 171,286". Kings just shy of 4.6" tall.
The set came all the way from its home, LA, to join my cabinet, and will take up it's place next to another set, coincidentally from the 1950s, coincidentally also from LA, and coincidenatlly also designed by a Herman - my Herman Steiner Master Set.
