Jaques Staunton "Hartson" tournament set c1895
Another high quality Victorian boxwood and ebony Staunton set from Jaques, loaded, with kings just over 3.5" tall - the knights are also particularly well carved in an era of variable quality. The set comes in a rather lovely, less common, style of box with finger joints (usually the tournament size boxes have weaker mitre joints, and the larger club boxes have stronger dovetail joints).
The eagle-eyed will note that the white queen is not original to the set - the black queen, which is original, is much more refined and elegant with a much smaller ball finial and crisper coronet.
