Large Gallant Knight set, c1948
Very large and nicely weighted Gallant Knight set from the late 1940s - Gallant Knight referred to these as the "Tournament size" in their adverts, though the kings are just shy of 5" tall - so not the same definition of "tournament" as in use today.
Made of "Tenite", a cellulose based form of plastic. Apparently items made of Tenite are best stored not in air tight box due to Tenite's tendancy to decay...but if you do store in a closed container, the advice is to use some "gas adsorbants". This set doesn't look like it has suffered any warping or decay, thankfully (and I'm not sure how common it is in these chess sets, if at all).
