Jaques Staunton "Lasker" Club set c1885
A very nice example of a Jaques boxwood and ebony "Lasker" Club set, with the kings standing around 4.3" tall. Circa 1885, in its original box. Both kings stamped "Jaques London".
When trying to determine the size of a Jaques set, I find it important to ask for an accurate measurement of the kings' base diameters - not only do many sellers struggle to take accurate readings of the height of a king, there is also no guarantee that the cross finials are present, or indeed have not been replaced (which could then exaggerate, or underplay, the "true" height). This particular set was being sold as 4", which would have made it a Small Club, rather than the full Club size that it is.
