Jaques Staunton "Tarrash/Steinitz-cross" c1870

A lovely Jaques Staunton library sized set from c1870.  I used to have another example of this set, which I sold when I acquired a tournament sized version...and instantly regretted the sale!  So I was thrilled to be able to replace it with this lovely example.

I think this style sits between a "Steinitz" and a "Tarrasch" in the modern Codex, so I tend to refer to it as a "Tarrasch-Steinitz cross".  Kings are a dainty 2.9" tall, and the black knights have developed a yellow crazed crackle to their varnish, which is quite stunning if you catch it in sunlight.

The set came with the 6th edition of The ABC of Chess, which had some really rather good Victorian adverts for other Jaques games
