Throned Figural Set mystery

A rather unusual figural set featuring kings seated on thrones.  Dating and origin unknown, but if I had to guess I would say anywhere between Germany and alpine Italy, and anything between 1930 and 1960.

The set features mirror-symettrical knights and bishops, which I have not seen on a set before (to my recollection).  Kings are 4.1" high (even whilst seated :D).   The bases of the set are interesting also - no felt here, but blocks of textured wood.
