Jaques Staunton "Broadbent" Club set c1935
At last! After a very long hunt for a Club set that I could afford, I stumbled across this lovely example from the 1930s. After a few minor repairs (one pawn collar chip and some base chips), this is once again a lovely historic set. Kings stand just over 11cm (4.37") and the set and box weigh a tad more than a whopping 2.9Kg. The last of the line, really, before the Second World War hit (quite literally for Jaques' London factory). My appetite is now even more whetted for a Club set from the 19th century!
After these sets, the quality dropped considerably, with the set in the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match being the only remaining set after the war which would be intriguiging enough to search for (though the design is not to everyone's taste).
