Bohemia Chess Factory "Dragon" knight set, c1950
An unusual set to find in the UK, let alone just the other side of my city!
A "dog" or "dragon" knight set made by the Bohemia Chess Factory out of walnut and maple. Lightly weighted, with 3.8" kings.
This set is the earliest version (with opposite coloured bishops' finials) and came with a small "Schach" booklet printed in Germany in 1950. I believe the box, with inlaid diagonal stripes, is original to the set as I have seen another early example with the exact same box (see Shane Chateuneuf's excellent website and write up here). The set also came with a board - again, I believe original to the set, as I have seen an early set with this exact same board.
A nice local find. The seller's wife's father was stationed with the army in Germany after the war, and met and fell in love with a local woman. They married and moved to the UK, leaving her mother and father in Nuremberg, Germany. The set was collected from Nuremberg, along with other belongings, when the seller's wife's grandmother passed away in 1992. It had sat in a draw, untouched, ever since.
