British Chess Company travel set..."Stamped*!
Another rare travel set, to accompany my stamped Jaques Whittington. This time it is a British Chess Company (BCC) (twice) stamped small Whittington style travel set, I'd estimate this is c1895 due to the attention to detail on the pieces and the high quality woods used (my assumption being that the later early 20th century sets lost some of the quality - though I may be wrong on this). Gorgeous wooden playing pieces, and a gorgeous playing surface, with possibly burr walnut and holly squares. Stamped on opposite corners "British Chess Company, Stroud, Gloucs". Kings 0.48" (0.83" including the peg). Board size 8 1/4" x 8 1/8". A more elegant "finger hole" solution than other Whittington sets, with a single finger hole in one folding flap, to allow one side to be opened (the side without the hole) and then the other. My other Whittington sets tend to have two finger holes on the frame edge of the case, rather than the flaps.
