Jaques (?) Old English (?) Library set c1840 (?)
A rather lovely little set, with Kings standing at 2.9" tall. Lots of question marks for this one - is it by Jaques? What style is this? What age?
My suspicion that this might be a small Jaques set comes not only from the quality of the set, but more importantly the knights look to be almost exactly like those found in a larger Jaques-stamped St George set which was sold by Luke Honey.
As to the style - we could call it "St George"-like, but the king's finial would beg to differ. It isn't the same as the style often referred to as "Calvert" either. It is its own thing! Perhaps "Old English" should suffice for now.
And, as to age, I would tentatively speculate circa 1840 from the form of the pieces, but may be anywhere from 1830 to 1870 I would say (with absolutely nothing more than my gut to go on!).
