Prisoner-of-war chess set, circa WWII?

A chess set very similar to others known to have been carved by POWs, my instinct would be during WWII. Sets like these were made out of spare bits of building materials that the prisoners could lay their hands on. Small metal crosses for the kings. King height is 3.0". Unfortunately the seller didn't know anything about the provenance of the set. I assume this was made by an allied POW, since the set ended up in England.
