BH Wood designed Persimmon chess set, 1940-50s
These sets were sold through Chess magazine, and I believe these were the more "robust" version of the original BH Wood designed "Coldfield" set, mentioned in adverts of the time. I have seen Guy Lyons describe this set as the "Persimmon" model, though I haven't found the advert yet which describes it as such (I am sure Guy is correct, though!). This is the larger of my two sets, with 3.7" kings and original box. The set is very well weighted, with wide bases - and is a lovely feeling set to play with. I think it may be slightly earlier than my smaller set, and has a nicer finish to it.
