BH Wood designed Persimmon chess set, 1940-50s
These sets were sold through Chess magazine, and I believe these were the more "robust" version of the original BH Wood designed "Coldfield" set, mentioned in adverts of the time. I have seen Guy Lyons describe this set as the "Persimmon" model, though I haven't found the advert yet which describes it as such (I am sure Guy is correct, though!). This is the smaller of my two sets, with 2.8" kings and original box. Pencil on the box indicates it was reduced for sale in 1957 to £2 6d - though I don't know if this were an original price, or someone selling on second hand. I *though* these sets were all sold through Chess Magazine, so it would be surprising to have a price on the box if so.
