St George set by Lund (or Merrifield?) c1820-1850?
A beautiful set, which I found hidden within an auction lot (it wasn't featured as the main selling point of the lot, bizarrely!). I am not sure which maker it should be attributed to, but certainly one of the good London makers. There are some similarities (as well as difference), to both a Lund set in the Vikhram Ravi collection, as well as a George Merrifield set in Jon Crumiller's collection.
The knights are beautifully carved, and all the pieces are well turned and polished out of boxwood and rosewood. There is what looks like evidence of where a round maker's label had been applied under one of the dark rooks. The rosewood black side has the finest and most beautiful wood grain I have yet seen in a set. Kings are 3.5" tall (their large crosses forming a good part of their height!).
