German "onion top" Staunton, circa 1920-30, 3.7"
There are some sets which you just know won't leave your collection, and this is one of those. It is a German "onion top" set from circa 1930, very similar to adverts by max Dahnert & Sohnem, Leipzig. These are relatively common sets to find (at least on continental Europe) - so why is this a keeper? Well, it is the first set that a fellow collector and friend has ever gifted to me. A wonderfully generous gesture. The chess collecting community are, on the whole, a generous bunch, but this is rather special.
