Early Regence or Directoire set - France, 1750-60
A remarkable part set, with unusual form knight (looking more like later bishops). The set was advertised as a part Regence set with "sadly missing knights heads". The set would never have had classic horses heads for the knights, and I was pleased to be able to buy this. It came with a magnificent board, in the style found detailed in Diderot's Encyclopédie (which was written between 1751 and 1772).
