Jaques folding leather board c1900
A stylish leather Jaques board, I think late Victorian, though it may be earlier (or yes, later!). Floral gold tooling around the edge of the playing side, with an impressed Greek Key pattern running between the tooling and the field of play. Simpler gold tooling to the reverse of the board, which has a "scumbled" finish, and stamped simply "Jaques, London".
The board is quite hefty, weighing 696g, which is surprising if you are used to cheaper leather coated boards. It's a very close twin to another board in my collection, which is near identical but in green and cream (weighing an even more impressive 880g, with very marginally larger dimensions, though the same size playing squares).
