Early 2000s Staunton

A modern Staunton, which will have been made in India, I suspect in the early 2000s. Kings are just over 4.1", weighing 77.8g and 84.5g respectively (boxwood and ebony).  No maker's mark, but each has a black leather pad to the base, rather than felt.

It is a remarkable thing that the Staunton design, first registered by Jaques in 1849, endures to this day - and not just that, but the fact that the perfection of the design is imitated so closely. And yet, the craftsmen of today cannot emulate the warmth and life that the original Jaques knights exuded.

I bought this set from a pawn brokers because it was a very good price, and I had always found the leather briefcase storage to be very attractive.  I can confirm it is a delight to open up the case and see the set nestled in it's cushioned home.
