German Toy set, early 19th century
A large German toy set, in the Nuremberg toy style mixed with selenus type galleries. Kings range from just under to over 4.5" tall. I believe this set may date to the early 19th century, from comparison with other sets with that dating. Tantalisingly there is the remain of a sticker/label under one of the pawns - with barely decipherable gothic font along the top, with what appears to san-serif smaller typeface below. I cannot (yet) make out what it says, but there is the fleeting chance that the maker may be able to be identified, were a similar label to appear elsewhere intact.
These sets were made from fruitwood and, given the age and fragility of the design, it is in remarkably good condition with just a few repaired breakages (notably one queen is shorter than the other because of a loss due to a breakage).
The rooks have a very cool "puzzle ball" feature, with small wooden balls being carved out in-situ from within the top cages, allowing the rooks to rattle as they are handled.
One side is darker than the other and has red paint detailing, whereas the lighter coloured set has black paint detailing. So I am currently undecided which side should play white and which should play black! Answers on a postcard, please.
