Old English set - circa early 1800s
A fine quality set in boxwood and intensely grained rosewood, dating I think from the early 1800s from the unusual form and the turning marks under the pieces. There are some similarities between this set and one of my other sets, possibly attributed to Calvert (not that I am implying this is in any way a Calvert - I just found the similarities interesting, including the King's crown and the deeply grained rosewood used)- I have included a photograph of some of the pieces next to each other.
Kings are 3.4" tall. There is considerable variation in the pawn carving, which also lends itself to this being an early set - some even have "double collars", but are otherwise identical in dimensions to their brethren.
