Fine English ribbed set c1820-30
A very finely made set from the early 19th century. Whilst the maker is unknown, the set is of the finest quality and the knights are very familiar to other knights I have in my collection. Very likely to be a London maker, I think, with a quality at a par with Lund or Calvert.
Very frustratingly, there are the remains of an old label under one of the white rooks - whether this was a maker's label or a retailer's label, I do not know. But I suspect, given the little wear, that the label was deliberately removed relatively recently in the life of the set.
Housed is a handsome case - whether original to the set or later, again I do not know. The purple pillows can be removed to reveal some remnants of a blue felt still stuck to the box - whether the felt had faded and been replaced at some point, or whether the box has been entirely repurposed, is not clear.
