Jaques Staunton "Morphy" tournament set c1849/50
A very early example of a Jaques Staunton, with very jowly "Morphy" knights. The set retains several original Victorian registration lozenges - according to Sir Alan Fersht's seminal "Jaques and Brisith Chess Company Chess Sets", the lozenges would date the set to 1849, though Morphy sets are typically associated with 1850. So perhaps very early 1850 might be a date more comfortable to associate with the set. Sadly, the Jaques stamp on the bottom of the white king is missing the start of "Jaques", so it gives no clue as to whether it would have been stamped "J Jaques" or simply "Jaques". Kings stand at 3.4" tall.
The set originally came with a Carton Pierre casket, which was sold separately - without an ivory exemption certificate, the pieces were worthless to the owner, so he (very very) kindly gifted them to me. I hope to buy the Casket off the new owner, and thus reunite the set with it's home of 175 years (as of writing).
