High quality Upright set c1860
Another very welcome, though temporary, visitor to the cabinet. A very high quality Upright set, potentially dating to around 1850-1860. The set has well carved knights, which are full of character - and a less common king's head, eschewing the usually more pointed, hat-like look with pointed finials of the Edinburgh and Northern upright varieties. A set with identical knights, though the more typical Upright kings' heads, was sold by Luke Honey and Jon Crumiller has a lovely example of the same form in his collection.
I cannot currently attribute a maker to this set, though the rooks have six crenellations, and much of the set is quite familiar when looking at the Jaques pattern books. Certainly from one of the good London makers, I would wager.
