Ivory Ribbed set, early 19th century
A lovely set with king finials that I have not seen before. Whilst barleycorn and ribbed sets were made throughout the 19th century, to my eye this appears to be an early one from the form of the rooks, knights and the various small inconsistencies in turning. Kings stand just over 3.2" tall.
The set was kindly gifted to me by a very nice lady who had been clearing her aunt's house - the set belonging originally to her grandfather who used to restore antiques. Along with the chess pieces came a bag of ivory draught/backgammon counters, as well as a very large box-board (51 x 60 cm when opened, with 2 1/4" (57mm) squares).
Maker unknown - but if anyone recognises the form, or the kings' finials, please do contact me!
