Late 18th century "Washington" set
An uncommon surviving English bone set, I believe from the last quarter of the 18th century. The style is similar to "Washington" sets (so called because of the familiarity to a set owned by George Washinton, which is on display at his old estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia).
Kings are 3.26" tall. The set has one red bishop top carved from ivory, but the rest is bone - it appears contemporary to the set, so I assume the carver was just using whatever came to hand to turn this set. Plenty of inconsistancies in the size and turning of the pieces, which is apparently typical of these early sets. Knights with manes on the left side of their body, which again is typical of 18th century sets (does anyone know why they later changed to the right side?). The set came in a very nice little mahogany slide top box. Missing one red rook and one base for a red pawn.
