Rare Galalith/Erinoid travel set ' The "International" ' c1920
A rather cute little travel chess set - sold as "plastic chessmen", which they are technically...but they are so much more! These are not your standard moulded plastic chessmen - these are turned and carved out of an early form of "casein" plastic commonly known as Galalith, but known by the trade name "Erinoid" in the UK (patented in 1911 in Britain), where I think this set originated. Interestingly, Erinoid was made at Lightpill Mills in Stroud, Gloucestershire from 1912 (Stroud also being the home of the relatively short lived British Chess Company...and also my paternal grandfather's home town and place of birth!).
Unlike the later plastics, such as Bakelite, Casein plastics could be dyed in many bright colours, and was a very stable and hardwearing material.
The set may be by HP Gibson & Sons, as I have read that they had a series of travel games called "The International".
