Large Maltese Cross set, 4.6" c1820
A wonderful chess set, which made the very long journey from Alaska, USA, back to Blighty (via a ridiculously large number of stops and depots!).
Magnificent in proportions, with kings standing at a stately 4.6". I believe this is an early 19th century English set. Knights are nicely carved, in a style mildly reminiscent of earlier Calvert sets, hence my suspicion that this is circa 1820. It may be earlier, or later. Thankfully one King's cross finial had survived (though with some damage), so I know this is one of those "Maltese Cross" examples. Just one knight and one rook are missing. Rooks have an unusual number of battlements (eight), which I am hoping may provide a clue as to which workshop this set was made in.
