Royal Doulton milk jug from Simpson's in the Strand
A link to a historic business, related to chess. Simpson's in the Strand, London, started off as a coffee shop and chess club in 1828 becoming the leading place for chess players in London, and later known as the home of chess in England (originally known as "Samuel Reiss's Grand Cigar Divan"!), becoming a restaurant 20 years later. It was one of the first restaurants in the UK to earn a Michelin star (in 1974). Sadly, Simpson's closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic - though there appear to be plans to reopen again, which is good news. The business maintained its link to its roots as a chess club, with the logo featuring a chess knight, and with various chess memorabilia across the rooms.
This lovely jug was gifted to me by a very good and kind collector friend.
